  • Survey: Travelers not only interested in primary cities

Global Advertising Strategies, an international marketing and advertising agency, completed an extensive travel survey dedicated to consumer preferences of over 500 million travelers from the countries of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China.) Over 15,000 individuals revealed such travel details as preferred airlines, top destinations of interest within the United States, as well as average budget per traveler.

This time Global focused on destinations outside of the typical tourist routes. Per previous research, cities such as New York and Los Angeles have been actively marketing to BRIC travelers through in-language materials, international travel expos and partnerships with the airline industry. Other destinations, unaware of the existing interest from this emerging travel audience, have not proactively reached out to increase the number of visitors from China, India, Brazil or Russia to their respective states.

  • Early Signs of a Hotel Rebound

The hotel industry in the United States appears to be rebounding this summer, mainly because of strengthening business travel. So far the biggest beneficiary is New York, though other cities on the East Coast are starting to report gains as well. And the upscale, full-service hotels that have long been favored by business travelers have benefited more from the upturn in demand than the midlevel brands, industry analysts say.

The rebound, said Mark V. Lomanno, president of Smith Travel Research of Hendersonville, Tenn., is “top-down.” The more expensive hotels, he said, “are recovering the fastest, and will continue to do so this summer, as business travelers come back.”

  • Final Approval In place for Minneapolis CC Solar Array

The Public Utilities Commission has given its approval for the City of Minneapolis to move ahead with using a $2 million grant from Xcel Energy’s Renewable Development Fund to construct a solar array at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The Minneapolis Convention Center’s solar array will be the Upper Midwest’s largest solar photovoltaic system, connected directly to the convention center’s internal electrical system and producing 750,000 kWh of renewable energy per year. "During economic recessions it is not uncommon to see associations and corporations cut their meetings budget," said Dave Arnold, CEO East, Colliers PKF Consulting USA.  "However, never before have we seen the stigma attached to organizations that attempted to hold valuable training and planning conferences.  With the average conference center occupancy level falling below 50 percent, the negative impact is obvious."

“As Senator Rockefeller has said, ‘Our vast and open transportation systems are part of people’s everyday lives in small towns and big cities and they connect our communities to a wider world.’  It is critical that in making security decisions, our policymakers take into account the effect the decisions will have on travelers, who provide more than $700 billion annually to the U.S. economy.  That is why we have convened a blue ribbon panel on travel security and screening that is exploring ways to maximize security while minimizing the burden to travelers.  The panel’s recommendations will come in the next few months.  Secure and efficient travel needs to be a bipartisan and immediate priority.”

The U.S. hotel industry welcomed the dawn of 2010. Performance measures in the first half of 2009 were particularly troublesome for many companies, and only in the closing months of the year were there glimmers of hope. In particular, steep price discounting appeared to be a less important strategy in filling rooms. As noted in this report, domestic tourism activity is starting to revive for a few select markets, declines in international travel are lessening and business travel remains mostly stagnant.
